Best SSD Enterprise Preview: OCZ Technology Enterprise SSDs for 2011

OCZ has three new enterprise drives planned for the first half of 2011: the Z-Drive R3, the Vertex 3 Pro and the Vertex 3 EX. The Z-Drive R3 (pictured left) is the fasted of the three featuring the high end SandForce SF-1565 controller. It uses a PCI Express Gen2 interface and is available with MLC (multi-level cell), eMLC (enterprise multi-level cell) or SLC (single-level cell) NAND flash. Read speeds are expected to reach up to 1000 MB/s, with write speeds up to 950 MB/s and up to 135,000 IOPS (4K random write). Drive capacities range from 150 GB (SLC ) to 1.2 TB (MLC/eMLC)! That’s a lot of storage space for this incredibly fast SSD. Read on for the SATA III offerings…

SATA III Enterprise Drives

Both the Vertex 3 Pro and the Vertex 3 EX feature the new Sandforce SF-2582 controller.  OCZ predicts read speeds up to 550 MB/s and write speeds up to 525 MB/s for both drives. The Vertex 3 Pro will use MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash and is expected to be capable of up to 75K IOPS on a 4k random write test. The Vertex 3 EX will use SLC (single-level cell) chips and OCZ predicts it will be capable of up to 80k IOPS (4k random write). Bear in mind that you will need a SATA III 6Gbps interface to take advantage of these speeds. Both drives will be available in 64-512 GB capacities. These are certainly exciting times for enterprise level flash. These drives promise to offer cutting edge read and write speeds for high-end applications. There have been no new OCZ announcements yet on the consumer front. We continue to recommend the OCZ Vertex 2 SSD for consumers due to its incredible write speeds.
